North West Hospitals

Alder Hey

Alder Hey's neonatal surgery unit was the first to be opened in the UK and one of only five in the country. Within this unit we provide specialist care for newborn babies, many of whom will have had or will need surgery.

Their Consultant Surgeons are trained in a full range of neonatal surgery, performing operations for correction of congenital problems such as abdominal wall defects, oesophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, bowel obstruction, Hirschsprung’s disease, neonatal tumours, urological conditions and imperforate anus.

Their team of highly skilled nurses are experts at caring for babies with airway, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems. They are trained in post-operative care and pain relief, and the management of feeding problems and stomas. We also work closely with specialised dieticians, pharmacists and speech therapists.

Arrowe Park

Arrowe Park is a designated Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – one of only 2 in Cheshire and Merseyside. This means they are able to care for some of the most poorly babies.

Their Neonatal Unit has 24 cots which enables them to provide specialised care for babies from around 24 weeks of pregnancy. Many of the babies they care for are born early (premature). However some babies born around the time they are due (term) can have problems too, some requiring a brief stay with us and others a more intensive, longer stay.

Arrowe Park's approach is caring, holistic, individualised and with an emphasis on family. They provide research based care and strive to keep abreast with the latest research and medical technology. They consider the psychological, physiological, social and spiritual needs of baby and family.
