Dedicated facility for community healthcare services has opened in Wrexham

Patients will benefit from the opening of Plas Gororau, on Wrexham Technology Park, which will deliver non-acute healthcare services.  

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has opened the facility, with funding support from the Welsh Government, for people who need outpatient healthcare services which can be delivered outside of an acute hospital environment. 

Phlebotomy facilities have expanded their service into Plas Gororau, offering in excess of 40,000 blood testing appointments per year. Mental health outpatients, which assess and treat approximately 4,500 referrals every year, has moved into the new facility from the acute site, reducing the footfall in Wrexham Maelor Hospital and improving patient experience.

A new purpose-built vaccination centre for North East Wales has also been created in Plas Gororau, which was previously in the Catrin Finch Centre, Wrexham University, and will provide an average of 60,000 vaccines per year, starting with the Covid-19 Spring boosters this month. 

The development also provides over 200 car parking spaces for staff and patients of the facility, which will play an important role in alleviating car parking pressures at the acute hospital.  

Michelle Greene, Director of East Integrated Health Community for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said: “This is really positive news that will greatly benefit our patients and local community, as the expansion of services means outpatients for these services won’t need to park or visit the main hospital. 

“Plas Gororau is only a short walk from the hospital’s main entrance and provides additional dedicated parking spaces, for patients and staff. 

“There’s also potential of further expansion of community services into Plas Gororau to provide additional space across the Wrexham Maelor Hospital site.” 

Development plans for phase two are ongoing with capacity for further expansion of services at the site in the future.
