About our Cochlear Implant Service

The North Wales Cochlear Implant Service, based at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, started in 1990 and we have now implanted over 550 people over the past 33 years. We are one of the 23 specialist NHS Cochlear Implant Services in the UK and provide services to North Wales and part of North West England. We are a friendly team and are confident that we will make you feel listened to and welcomed at our service.

We aim to provide an individualised assessment that addresses your personal needs in terms of your hearing and the impact this may have on your quality of life. We are aware that for some people being referred for a cochlear implant assessment may be a little daunting, but we would like to reassure you that there are no ties in coming for assessment and the ultimate decision is yours - we are here to guide and advise you in making the right decision for you.

Referral Process

If your local Audiologist or ENT doctor feels that it is appropriate they may discuss a referral for a cochlear implant assessment with you.

If you decide to have a cochlear implant assessment, your Audiologist/ ENT doctor will refer you to us for an assessment and you will receive an appointment to attend for an initial cochlear implant assessment within a few weeks.

Alongside the appointment letter you may receive questionnaires which we would appreciate if you could complete prior to the appointment.

Should you need an interpreter booking for the appointment or assistance with hospital transport please contact us.
